Selected Essays Prior to 2005:*

*(Below is a sampling of a few essays that I have written over the years. Reading back over them I realize some of my opinions have changed and I hope my grammar has improved. Most are still in a rough-draft form. Still, I feel they are a good representation of my work.)

Numbers, Money and New Definitions, February 9th, 2004 (pdf)

Exerpt: "President Bush just proposed a $2.4 trillion budget for fiscal 2005. To put that in perspective, that money stacked in $1 bills could reach from New York to Los Angeles more the 60 times. Or does that put it in perspective? It is a ton of money. But when you talk about money stretching across the country through, it's hard to conceptualize. Multiply that times 60 and it only gets tougher. So $2.4 trillion begins to lose its meaning in terms of our everyday lives."

Giveth and then Taketh Away, February 5th, 2003 (pdf)

Exerpt: "The government is not going to 'give' money to Clinton; they are just not going to take as much away. That may seem like a minor point but it is actually quite important, especially when the former President seems unable to make the connection."

The Importance of Economic Growth, December 28th, 2002 (pdf)

Exerpt: "In the U.S. the average income is roughly $30,000 and in Brazil it is currently around $6,500. Where can we expect be in 100 years? The tables below tell the story."

An Issue Worth Protesting, October 17th, 2002 (pdf)

Exerpt: "The Celebration for the Critters is an annual fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Center for the Reproduction of Endangered
Species. You would think this event, put on by individuals who have dedicated their lives to saving endangered species, would be looked upon favorably by PETA but apparently not. As ticket holders to the event approached the main gates they were greeted by numerous protesters holding signs which read 'Keep Elephants in Africa, Not in Cages.' "

A Tax Cut for the Wealthy, March 7th, 2001 (pdf)

Exerpt: "For the past year we have heard the newly elected President push for a tax cut, that in his words, would 'benefit all Americans.' But is this really the case? Just as many times we have heard the voice of his opposition proclaiming it's a tax cut for the wealthy."
