Update from India
We are far behind on updating our website, but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy.
In the last few months we've traveled in mainland China, took in the sites in Japan, accidentally got caught in a Thai New Years Celebration during a one day layover, spent 10 days with friends Jennie and Dan in Northern India, and have visited quite a few interesting economic think tanks along the way.
We even were briefly back in the US for two weeks, albeit, not the mainland. We caught a flight from Narita to Oahu where my sister and brother-in-law live to visit family, most notably, our 2-month old niece Ella. It was a great experience seeing our first niece.
We are now in Bangalore, and while it is one of the world's IT capitals, we're having a bit of a hard time finding reliable connections to upload. So no new photos or entries to report. Yet, everything is being saved in the laptop so at some point it will be posted.
In the meantime, I thought I would alert readers to one of my articles that was recently published on A World Connected. It is on Vietnamese shrimp (pictured below) and the U.S. anti-dumping tariffs that are making them expensive for consumers back home.

Hope you enjoy it.

Off to Mainland China
Since our last update we've made our way from Thailand, to Cambodia, to Vietnam, and now find ourselves in Hong Kong. This afternoon Emily and I will be traveling to Beijing by train.
While we have a good deal to put up on the site about our adventures in Asia, we just are not going to have time to upload everything before our departure. In the meantime, you can take a look at some of our recent photos from Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
One thing I did want to post before we leave is a long overdue essay on Venezuela that can be found here. Give it a read if you have a chance.
There will be more to come on shrimp farmers in Vietnam, health care tourism in Thailand, and other stories from our travels.

Slowly But Surely
Today we leave Caracas and are heading into Ecuador so we figured it was about time we got something new up on the site.
As usual… uploading and proofreading are taking longer than expected.
We’ve updated the travelogue with our adventures from El Salvador through Nicaragua, while the photo page is updated until our departure from Panama City.
UPDATE (10/25/2005): We've posted updates through Panama as well as a few more essays (here, here, and here). We're off to the Galapagos. Be back in a week.

Finally… an Update
What have we been doing since we left Mazatlan? Well if you are immediate family, or just really bored, all the details can now be found in daily entries since July 28th. We’ve also updated our other website with new pictures of our travels.
Emily has put up her final post on Cuba, which can be found directly below. I’ve also posted two more essays: Che Guevara: The Man Behind the Icon and The Case Against the Cuban Embargo. Give them all a read if you have the time. Shortly, I’ll be posting one more essay on Cuba. It will really be more of a summary of my thoughts on the trip and after that I’ll be moving on to other topics.
On a side note, I want to encourage everyone to head over and read the recent updates about our family friend Ross Dillon. Ross suffered severe head injuries when a vehicle struck him from behind while he was biking in Sonoma County on June 3rd, 2002. In the last month and a half he has begun to make extraordinary progress communicating. More than three years after his accident it is the first time he has truly started to speak. Here is a particularly touching entry from this last week sent in by his mother Betsy<:
August 8, 2005 9:30 PM--Just got a note from Betsy:Hi,Ross has had a good day. This morning he started the day by saying, "I don't know my name", "I love my parents", and "I am a man." I made signs that said "My name is Ross Dillon" and put them up in Ross's room. Two hours later, he said "I love my name." "Ross Dillon feels good." "I love my name, Ross Dillon." "Ross Dillon" (this time all of it was very clear).
Then he said to Jeremiah and me, "Who are you people?" Looking at Jeremiah, "Are a man." "I am a kid." He said a number of other things, but the neatest was, "I love my parents and they love me."
This afternoon, after being on his stomach and pedaling, he knocked the cones off the table with his right hand 125 times in six minutes. Jeremiah then had him do it with his left arm, much more difficult, and he did 5.
Onward and upward.
Betsy
Ross’ webpage can always be found on the left sidebar for those who not only want to keep up on his miraculous progress, but also want to be inspired by his astounding determination.

Updating the Site
We’ve finally posted some of our travelogue on Cuba below. At this point, we are still trying to figure out the best way to update the site. It’s taken us longer than expected to get all that we have written into the computer, but at least this is a start.
For those who are interested in reading some of the details of our trip to Cuba, they can scroll down on this page and start with July 5th. Another option is to view all of our Cuban entries, but there will be a lot more text on this page.
For most days both Emily and I have separate entries, so many posts retell the same stories from slightly different perspectives. Soon I’ll also be putting up a few essays on my Cuban experience that will have a bit more analysis, as opposed to what is mainly a travelogue for my enteries up until this point.
One more quick note: We've uploaded a few pictures of Mexico at our other site. Hope you enjoy!

New Link on Blogroll
I've added a new weblog, Coast to Coast, to my blogroll down on the left. It's author, Tao Chen, was in a Schweser Seminar with me this past weekend for the L3 CFA exam. We had a good time during lunch breaks talking about everything from Canadian politics to photography to China. Over the next month most of our conversations will undoubtedly center around the exam, but after June 4th I'm looking forward to picking his brain on other topics before we leave on our trip.

Advertising on Blogs
There was an interesting article in the WSJ last Friday on blog advertising:

At their best, blogs are an advertiser's dream: the diary-style Web sites that feature running commentary and reactions are tightly targeted niche markets where avant-garde enthusiasts regularly return to read, post and send in tips. Well-placed blog ads can boost a company's image as cutting-edge. Plus, they're inexpensive: $350 a week, for instance, for premium positioning on Mr. Denton's high-profile inside-Washington blog, Wonkette, which got 2.2 million "page views" last month, a measure of how many times a single visitor looks at one Web site page.
But many companies are wary of putting their brand on such a new and unpredictable medium. Most blogs are written by a lone author. They are typically unedited and include spirited responses from readers who can post comments at will. Some marketers fear blogs will criticize their products or ad campaigns. And, like all new blog readers, companies are just learning how to track what's being said on blogs and which ones might make a good fit for their ads.

Question
Anyone have advise on how to stop trackback spam? I'm getting like 20 a day from some online poker site. I thought it would stop but it's been a week straight now and I'm getting sick of deleting these things. Hit the 'Comments' link below if you have any suggestions. Thanks.

I'm Back
I've returned from my week of blogging over at Freespace. I encourage my readers to give Mr. Sandefour's site a read when possible. The link is the third from the top on my "Daily 15" blogroll.
My last few posts on Freespace included:
Energy Independence, Blame America First, and A Thank You to Mr. Powell.

Guest Blogging

This week I'll be guest blogging over at Freespace, a website run by Timothy Sandefur. Mr. Sandefur is a Fellow in the Center for Public Interest Law at the Pacific Legal Foundation. You can read more about him here.
I'll be linking to my posts on Freespace throughout the week but for the most part there will be no commentary on Economics With A Face. So come on over and give Freespace a read. It should be well worth it.

Additions to the Blogroll
I'm updating my blogroll today by moving a few things around and adding some new links. Here's a sample of a few of the new blogs off to the left:
Leda and the Swan: Young economist blogging out of Bogotá, Colombia. She just got a job teaching intermediate microeconomics so it should be an interesting blog to follow.
SeattleWilco: Good friend and college roommate Erik just started up this blog last week. I imagine there will be an occasional back and forth between our sites, which in truth has already started.
A Stitch in Haste: KipEsquire is "a lawyer who doesn't practice, an investment banker who does no deals, an academic who doesn't teach, and a policy wonk who belongs to no think tank." He's also becoming one of my daily reads.
HispanicPundit: Fellow San Diegan with libertarian leanings. Great list of economic blogs which he was kind enough to put me on.
Th'inkwell: Blogger out of the United Kingdom. I truthfully haven't had much time to go through her site but with links to Trey Givens and Cox & Forkum I have high hopes. She also gave me the idea for the thumbnail images when introducing new links.

The Day After Tomorrow
This Wednesday, with any luck, we should know who will be occupying the White House for the next four years. Unfortunately, my internet connection went out last night so I'm a little late getting up a post on tomorrow's presidential election. Look for it later on this evening.
In the meantime the Cato Institute has posted a piece by Doug Bandow in favor of John Kerry, and another by Dan Griswold which makes the case for Bush. Both are worth a read.
"The deficit can be cut in half if Congress "is willing to make tough choices," says President Bush. But GOP legislators are likely to make tough choices only if he is replaced by a Democrat. History teaches us that divided government equals fiscal probity, so vote Democratic for President if you want responsible budgeting in Washington."
"Meanwhile, Kerry and his party have proposed huge increases of their own in federal spending. Their chief criticism of Bush on health care, education and just about everything else but defense is that he has not been spending enough. And they want to underwrite their own spending spree with higher taxes on, you guessed it, "the rich." Kerry and much of his Democratic base want to slow the advancement of free trade and accelerate regulation of the economy. They criticize Bush for his conduct of the war in Iraq but do not challenge it on principle."
